The Signal
Private equity has bid up service and trade costs so aggressively that founders and operators can now undercut PE-owned incumbents and capture market share at scale. This is not a productivity story—it's margin arb on inflated comps. Simultaneously, the UST market's mathematical dysfunction is no longer deniable. Policymakers who claimed demand for long-dated debt "was fine" either miscalculated or lied. Veterans benefits now consume 10% of federal receipts and grow 2.5x faster than tax revenues, crowding out everything else. The hard-currency medical liability is non-discretionary. Austerity, tax hikes, and growth cannot thread this needle. QE is mechanically inevitable within 6–8 weeks when Bessent cuts long-term issuance and duration repricing forces Warsh's hand.
What's Moving
- Small-cap operators in trades & skilled services — Exploit PE's price umbrella on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, specialized contracting. Margin is PE's opportunity. (via @lukegromen)
- GLD / Physical gold — Veterans benefits + mandatory healthcare spend eliminate fiscal flexibility. Bessent's LT issuance cuts in 4 weeks trigger duration repricing, forcing Fed pivot. Maple Leaf shortages persist; expect capital flight on any Fed signal. (via @lukegromen)
- GDX / GDXJ (gold miners) — Trump diesel deal + Russia's accelerated gold/FX accumulation strengthen gold/oil ratio (miner profitability proxy). Asymmetric upside on gold revaluation ($15–40K endpoint). (via @lukegromen)
- UST 2s/10s curve — Watch for gamma triggers on duration repricing. Bid-to-cover ratios on next auctions are the tells. Warsh cannot suspend dealer capital constraints without admitting QE; cannot let auctions fail without admitting fiscal dominance. Both paths break consensus.
- DXY structural shorts — Dollar hegemony depends on functional UST market. Once that breaks, carry unwinds cascade. Target: 60 or lower.
Crosscurrents
- Russia diesel deal in USD — Some read this as USD strength signal; @santiagoaufund flags it proves global capital still runs on dollar rails despite de-dollarization rhetoric. The real signal: Trump is willing to negotiate commodity flows, which could soften sanctions. (via @santiagoaufund)
- Fed "sized for a wedding ring" — Treasury digital infrastructure is eroding Fed independence faster than consensus admits. But Warsh still controls near-term lever. His choice in 6 weeks (QE vs. admission) determines whether this transition is managed or chaotic.

Desk Notes
- @lukegromen — UST market math is breaking; small operators can exploit PE's price umbrella while central banks signal contingency gold positioning. Austerity + high rates + 10% deficits = mechanical gold revaluation, not option.
- @santiagoaufund — Global capital still runs on dollar rails; Russia accepting USD on diesel proves it. Fed independence eroding via Treasury digital channels; Warsh is buying time, not solving the problem.
